Insulation Installation Precautions

 Insulation Precautions

Insulation Installation Precautions you should observe to protect your Person and your Home.

Too many DIYers are either unaware of the needs or don’t think the precautions apply to them. I can help solve the lack of awareness with the information I provide here. I fear there isn’t anything but the school of hard knocks to change attitudes. I only hope the lessons are learned before serious damage occurs either to your health or to your home.

Wear Protective Clothing

You should protect against skin and eye irritation and contact with the insulating material – especially fibreglass.

1.    A long-sleeved shirt with collar and cuffs buttoned

2.    Gloves

3.    Hat

4.    Safety glasses or goggles

5.    Disposable dust mask or respirator

Do not cover attic vents with insulation.

Proper ventilation must be maintained to prevent overheating in summer and moisture accumulation all year long.

If you cover these heat-producing items with attic insulation, the heat can build up to the point of ignition and the ensuing fire.

Electrical Fire Safety codes prohibit installing thermal insulation within three inches of a recessed fixture enclosure, wiring compartment, or ballast, or above the fixture so that it will trap heat and prevent the free circulation of air. UNLESS the fixture is labelled as suitable for Direct Contact of Insulation.
